Flakiness & Elongation Gauge (Thickness Gauge)
The Flakiness and Elongation Gauge is used to assess the shape characteristics of coarse aggregate particles, specifically to identify flaky and elongated pieces that can adversely affect the strength and workability of concrete and road-building mixes.
The Thickness Gauge portion consists of a metal frame with a series of parallel slots of varying width; aggregate particles are passed through the slots, and any particle passing through a slot is classified as flaky. A separate length gauge (with graduated bars) is used to determine elongation. Together, these gauges help quality control labs ensure aggregate shape complies with grading and shape specifications for construction use.
